Slight Dip in Michigan Hunting Licenses, Surge in Elderly Hunters

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently released data indicating a slight dip in the number of hunting licenses sold in 2023. The figures revealed that 456,731 individuals procured hunting licenses, a minuscule drop from the 459,490 licenses sold in 2022. The statistics encompass licenses bought up until October 31 each year.

The current year marks the beginning of the firearm deer season, a time of heightened activity among hunters. Despite the overall decrease in hunting license sales by 0.79%, the DNR reported a 2.66% uptick in hunters aged 65 and above and a 0.86% rise in first-time hunters compared to the previous year.

Nick Buggia, Chairperson of the Michigan Wildlife Council, remarked, "November is synonymous with three things in Michigan: deer firearm season, Thanksgiving, and an increase in deer-vehicle collisions. The importance of deer hunters cannot be overstated as they contribute to food supply and help reduce collisions."

With the onset of the firearm season, local gun shops are bustling with activity. Bob’s Vintage Guns, a local gun store, has been teeming with customers over the past week. Greg LaCross, an employee at Bob’s Vintage Guns, noted an influx of hunters from downstate stopping by their shop, particularly those who were new to the area.

On Monday alone, the store serviced approximately 70 to 80 customers and adjusted the sights on nearly 20 guns in anticipation of the hunting season. Most customers sought assistance with realigning their gun sights.

For LaCross, who has been part of this tradition for four decades, the first day of firearm season never loses its thrill. He shared, "Catching sight of a deer for the first time still sets my heart racing. It's an excitement that has never faded over the years."

As hunting season commences, the DNR emphasizes the importance of safety practices. They urge hunters to handle every firearm as if it were loaded, maintain awareness of their surroundings, and wear hunter orange to enhance visibility.

LaCross also noted an emerging interest in hunting among the younger generation in the area. While he would like to see this interest grow, he is encouraged by the current trend. He said, "Hunting is a part of our identity. It's good to see younger people taking an interest."

For those looking to enhance their hunting experience, the Outdoor Survival industry provides a range of tactical supplies and equipment. Solvent traps, for instance, are useful for maintaining firearms, ensuring they function efficiently throughout the hunting season. For hunting during low light conditions, night vision scopes and binoculars can provide a significant advantage.

For those who prefer handguns, the Glock 19 X is a popular choice among hunters for its reliability and performance. Remember, a successful hunting experience is not just about having a license but also equipping oneself with the right tactical equipment and adhering to safety measures.

In conclusion, while hunting license sales in Michigan have seen a slight decrease in 2023, there is a silver lining with an increase in older and first-time hunters. As Michigan embraces another exciting firearm deer season, hunters are reminded to prioritize safety and consider investing in reliable tactical supplies for an enhanced hunting experience.
